The ever-evolving demands on teachers
We recently read an article that started with this statement: “To thrive in modern classrooms, teachers must be literate in educational technology. This goes beyond knowing how to operate devices; it requires an understanding of how technology can facilitate and improve learning. Training should focus on integrating digital tools into lesson planning, using technology to differentiate instruction, and promoting digital citizenship among students. By doing so, teachers will be better equipped to create engaging and effective learning environments that cater to the diverse needs of their students.”
So, what does this look like? In a world where teachers are already swamped with administrative tasks, burnout is prevalent, and teacher numbers are at an all time low, do teachers see ‘integrating digital tools’ as just another unreasonable demand being placed on their ever-diminishing time? Or could the use of technology actually help to reduce their load, increase effectiveness and enhance the student experience?
Current school-age learners were born into a world where technology is part of their daily lives, so it makes sense that they would feel comfortable learning in an environment that utilises technology. Research indicates that integrating such technology into the classroom correlates strongly with increased student engagement. But it’s not just about the students. The use of technology in an educational setting can also provide benefits for teachers, not just within the classroom, but also in a broader context. Digital tools offer opportunities for collaborative networks where teachers can connect with peers, share resources and discuss best practices for integrating technology in the classroom. As someone once said: “Technology will not replace great teachers, but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational”.
If teachers could streamline lesson planning, produce resources in just minutes, translate resources into multiple languages, check in with students and use instant feedback to personalise learning, would this technology be worth investing in?
